Community Consultation Redevelop Community Centre Frontage

www.whitehead-ni.com

“COASTAL COMMUNITIES FUND”

WHITEHEAD COMMUNITY CENTRE

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

Overview

As part of the continued improvement programme for the regeneration of the East Antrim Coastline and in particular the regeneration of our town, Whitehead Community Association intend to apply for funding from the Coastal Communities Fund to help redevelop part of King’s Road from Balmoral Avenue to the Whitehaven Respite Centre.

The intention will be to refurbish the shop frontage, produce a Whitehead central hub for information and tourism, redevelop the retail units, increase the opportunity for start-up and small businesses and re-landscape the shopfront to roadway pedestrian area.

The project will significantly improve the centre of Whitehead and at the same time maintain its historic and cultural heritage. (Traditional cinema doors)

As well as Whitehead regeneration, the project will also provide the town with economic growth and sustainable job creation for our local community.

Although this is by no means a “done deal”, the Community Association will be applying to Mid & East Antrim Council for Planning Permission by the end of January, before lodging an Application for funding.

The overall project is intended to attract an increased footfall to Whitehead, and allow the further enhancement of ongoing local projects (“The Blackhead Path”, The Railway Preservation Society, The Gobbins etc).

Community Acceptance

Before embarking on such a major project for our town, it is important that the community of Whitehead is engaged and behind the application.

To this end, we would like to provide you with relevant information, and intend to hold information evenings, display updates around the town and also get input from the community on potential interest in start-up ventures or small business that could complement the programme.

Community Questionnaire

A small questionnaire is attached, which, when returned, will help guide with the decision making on the project.

A positive response will add significant weight to the Funding Application.

Build Your Own Website Course

Course Location And Time Details

This is a pilot course running from 7 to 8.30 pm for 4 weeks, beginning Thursday 31 January 2019 and continuing on Thursday 7, 14 and 21 February 2019.

What The Course Is and Is Not About

This course is about building your own new website with a domain name and self-hosting. It includes: finding and purchasing a suitable domain name for your needs, what to look for and how to find it, self-hosting (you will not need your own hosting), what is hosting, linking your domain to your host, creating a WordPress site, adding articles, necessary legal pages and essential plugins and customising your site, including adding pictures or graphics.

The course will NOT cover free websites or blog sites, and due to time constraints, it will not be able to provide feedback or help on sites that you currently have operational. You are welcome to attend and learn how to create your own website and you may then be able to make changes to your current website later, if you choose. If you are not ready to purchase a domain name, there are a few available that you can use temporarily for practice.

Essentials

You will need your own laptop or tablet with internet capability. It doesn’t matter what kind or make, as long as you can use it to get online and you are able to type words into it.

Cost

You will need to purchase your own domain name, this will be about $10 and will be through a recognised domain registrar (it can be through one of your own choice if you wish). If you want to purchase your domain name during the course, you will need to bring a credit card with you. If you do not have a domain name or are not ready to purchase one yet, there are some spare ones you can practice on. What to choose and how to purchase will be covered in the first class.

Apart from this, I promised a no-cost course, however, some people have said they would be willing to contribute to costs, so there will be a “donation” box available at each class for those who wish to contribute. It is not a requirement, purely a voluntary donation if you choose. Any donations will be used to defray the cost of the course (room hire, hosting, etc).

Course Outline
Week 1 – Domain Names
Week 2 – Hosting
Week 3 – Setting Up Your Site
Week 4 – Customising Your Site

Whitehead History

www.whitehead-ni.comWhitehead is a Victorian Railway Town built on the site of a former hamlet around Castle Chichester. Much of its history can be found in the book “Whitehead: The Town with no Streets” by P J O’Donnell.

Some other information can be found in several sources available in Whitehead Library or elsewhere. A few extracts, fully credited, are given here.

Castle Chichester, a ruin, which lies on private land and which cannot be accessed, can still be seen in Chester Avenue, opposite the junction with the King’s Road, Whitehead, or from Marine Parade. “Its square form, the style of its construction, particularly in its secret stairs constructed in its walls, suggest the idea that its erection took place in the 12th or 13th century….. . Its name, however, would imply otherwise, as the Chichesters were not possessed of any property in this country  until the conclusion of the 16th century …… .

There was, until about the middle of the 17th century, a considerable village or town at Castle Chichester. It possessed a harbour or quay, of which the remains are still to be seen. It had a considerable trade with Scotland, and was the station from whence the mails were dispatched to that country. The castle may probably have been for some time occupied by some of the Chichesters, or from some other cause or motive have received its present name on becoming their property.” Taken from “Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland Parishes of County Antrim III 1833, 1835, 1839 – 40 Larne and Island Magee Vol.10 Edited by Angelique Day and Patrick McWilliams The Institute of Irish Studies The Queen’s University of Belfast”

“Upwards of 100 years ago a packet boat used to call at Castlechichester from Scotland to discharge its cargo and deliver letters.  A small boat used to attend the Parish to convey the letters to Belfast from Castlechichester for which it received £100 per annum.  At that time an agent resided at Castlechichester.” Taken from “N.I Public Record Office Parish of Island Magee 1830 -1840 Island Magee Parish Box 11 Antrim XI by James Boyle 1840”

The residents of Whitehead purchased the former Whitehead Cinema about 30 years ago, to form a Community Centre which is located in the heart of the Whitehead Conservation Area. The centre was refurbished 2007 / 2008 and has excellent accommodation for meetings, etc., with free parking outside.

A large hall is available, with a stage, and is suitable for dances, sports, sales promotions, pantomimes, public meetings, etc and can accommodate up to 230 people (seated). A kitchen is available for use only with the main hall (at additional cost).

The upstairs conference room can seat 60 people, theatre style, and there is also a committee room: and one office, which can be hired out as a meeting room but which is available for long term rental. The other office currently houses a barber shop.

There is a lift (suitable for disabled access) to the upper floor and facilities suitable for use by people with a disability.

The new entrance (where the old garage was formerly located) now houses a laundrette and the centre supervisors’ office.

For further information contact the centre supervisor in person or by telephone during the hours shown above or by email to WCA at whitehead-ni.com (Remove the spaces and replace at with @ – to try and reduce the amount of SPAM!)
